Finding pictures

• Search box: Simply enter a word, e.g. Hauptplatz, church or a family name. Typos and missing umlauts are no problem.
• Years: 1924 finds pictures from that year, 1920-1930 a period, um 1950 roughly that time, 1950er a decade. 0 finds pictures without a year.
• Number: Every object has a fixed number. #56 opens number 56 directly.
• Precise search: "alte Schule" in quotation marks searches for exactly this phrase, -winter excludes a word.
• Filters: Under “Explore” you can filter by topic, type, place, period and more. On the timeline, simply drag to select the period you want.

Uploading pictures

1. Register for free (name, email, password) and confirm your email.
2. Tap “Upload a picture”. You can take a photo directly with your phone – photographing old photos from an album works well too (hold the phone straight, no flash, in daylight).
3. Enter a title and choose suitable topics. Everything else is optional.
4. We briefly review the contribution and send you an email as soon as it is online.

Helping out

A question mark on a picture means there is an open question. If you know something – who is shown, when or where it was – simply add it as a comment.

Adjusting the display

At the top of every page you will find “Display”: there you can enlarge the text, switch on high contrast or dark mode and activate the simple search.
